New Age Materials

From automobiles and airplanes to boats and bathtubs, composite materials are found in everyday objects and are having transformative effects in large-scale, high-performance industrial settings as well.

Strong. Lightweight. Low-cost. Composite materials make our lives easier, safer and more comfortable. Imagine an airplane flying further, using less fuel and carrying more passengers. Innovative new research collaborations are making this possible and UBC is at the forefront of these exciting new discoveries.

The Composites Research Network (CRN) is an integrated network of academic and industry partners who have come together to solve specific challenges, share best practices and provide a structured and sustainable approach to growing and supporting the composites industry in Western Canada. This common pursuit of knowledge creation, translation and application has led to improved capabilities in design, manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul and stimulated R&D investments essential for industrial innovation and productivity.
